CHALLENGES OF TRANSPORTING LYCHEE FRUIT

During transport, lychee fruit is highly susceptible to decay, particularly blue mold (Rhizopus), from airborne and surface microorganisms that are often present in high-humidity reefer environ- ments. To control the rate of decay while lychees are in long distance ocean trans- port, it is a common commercial practice to use either SO2 slow-release pads or SO2 fumigation for disease control.
